The project "Getting to know Latvia" will promote the integration of citizens of third countries into Latvian society
    09.11.2023.

In order to promote the integration of third-country nationals who legally reside in Latvia into Latvian society, from October 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026, the "Cooperation Platform" association is implementing the "Getting to Know Latvia" project.

The aim of the project is to provide citizens of third countries with an introductory course on life in Latvia that meets their needs, providing both theoretical and practical lessons to promote the participants' integration into society, access to the labor market, further education, as well as improve civic, cultural and everyday life skills.

All citizens of third countries who have received the right to stay in the territory of Latvia, asylum seekers and persons in need of international protection are invited to participate in the project activities. Representatives of local society will be invited to participate in some events together with foreigners living in Latvia.

The main activity in the course of the project will be the introductory course "Getting to know Latvia", as a result of which the participants will gain an understanding of the basic values of Latvia's history and culture, the country, its political system, state administration and the rule of law, will receive knowledge about the system and availability of social, educational and health care services, will get acquainted with labor market and business start-up opportunities. Citizens of third countries will have the opportunity to get to know Latvian society and everyday life, traditions, their understanding and expressions, as well as skills in creating intercultural dialogue.

It is planned to train 580 citizens of third countries throughout Latvia in the free introductory course.

The "Getting to know Latvia" project is implemented by the association "Cooperation Platform" within the framework of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund. The project is co-financed by the European Union. Grant agreement no. PMIF/13.3./2023/1/01.

The total funding of the project amounts to 249,785 euros, which is made up of 75% funding from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund for the period 2021-2027 and 25% co-financing from the state budget.

The project "Integration ABC - 4" was successfully completed: 1132 participants attended the integration courses and the Latvian language club
    30.09.2022.

In order to promote the integration of persons who are nationals of third countries and legally residing in Latvia - immigrants - into Latvian society, from April 2021 to September 2022, the association "Cooperation Platform" implemented the project "Integrations ABC - 4".

The main goals of the project were to introduce a high-quality integration course and Latvian language club programs for immigrants, to organize interactive, educational events promoting mutual understanding and the integration process for both immigrants living in Latvia and representatives of local society.

The main activities during the project were integration courses, lessons in the Latvian language club, intercultural events, as well as contemporary art activities.

During the project, the program of integration courses was introduced and 54 groups of integration courses were organized, in which 803 participants graduated. It should be mentioned that 10 groups of additional integration courses were organized, in which 200 representatives of the target group studied. In integration courses, third-country nationals gained knowledge and understanding of Latvia's history, current social, socio-political, economic and cultural processes in Latvia. The training took place both face-to-face and remotely.

In order to strengthen Latvian language skills in an informal and friendly atmosphere, promote the use of conversational language in everyday life and reduce the speech barrier, Latvian language club lessons were organized in the project. 329 participants in 25 groups participated in trainings in Latvian language clubs, both in person and remotely.

Introducing immigrants to the culture of Latvians and other peoples living in Latvia, several events promoting intercultural communication and socialization took place. Thus, in November 2021, "Traditions Day" was held, in which more than 70 project participants participated, visiting the House of the Black Men, learning about the ancient history of Old Riga and participating in gathering activities. Several participants took the opportunity to get to know Latvian culture and visited the Riga Stock Exchange Art Museum, the Riga Motor Museum and the Cosmos Museum of Illusions, as well as concerts and theater performances in Riga, Liepāja and Rēzekne.

An interesting activity took place in Riga and Liepāja - a simulation game in which 40 participants took part and got to know Latvia and its inhabitants more by playing out various possible situations.

The project participants also took part in the 20th General Latvian Milk, Bread and Honey Festival in Jelgava, jointly preparing a floating vehicle - the Integration boat, which attracted the attention of the jury and received an appreciation award.

Those involved in the project could also go on an excursion, getting to know Vidzeme - Sigulda, Cēsis and Rauna. Several joint creative and educational workshops were also held: for example, a workshop for making Christmas decorations, knotted bracelets, summer solstice traditions workshops and a Hebrew painting master class.

Immigrants creatively got involved and actively participated in contemporary cultural events - an improvisational theater performance was jointly created in Rēzekne, an environmental object - an installation was created in Ramatā, a contemporary art plein air was held in Riga, within the framework of which the participants painted a brick wall in the graffiti technique and an animated short film made in the "stop motion" technique.

It should be noted that representatives of the local society also participated in all these events, thus allowing the nationals of third countries to practically strengthen their Latvian language skills and what they learned in the integration courses.

The project "Integration ABC - 4" implements the society "Cooperation Platform" within the Refuge, Migration and Integration Fund. The project is co-financed by the European Union. Grant Agreement No. PMIF/8/2020/4/04.

Inviting foreigners living in Latvia to ebru painting master class
    31.03.2022.

On Thursday, 19 May 2022 from 17.00 - 19.00 we welcome foreign nationals living in Latvia and representatives of the local community to visit the masterclass of ebru - painting on water.

Ebru - painting on water, known today as decorative applied paper art, is an ancient art technique originated in the Middle East, the ancient Persia in the 13th century. Ebru is one of the oldest forms of Turkish art, and in 2014, recognizing the unique value of ebru, UNESCO put it on the list of humanity's intangible cultural heritage.

The drawing is designed with colours that don't dissolve in water but remain on the surface of the water. The colours do not converge with each other and produce unique ornaments. The colours consist of natural pigments, water and a special liquid that helps the paint not sink and expand on the surface of the water. All materials are natural. Each drawing on the water is unique, as unique as our changing lives, so they will never repeat and will create something new each time.

The masterclass will be headed by the ebru artist Olga Orlova, who has acquired this art in Turkey and has been practising it in Latvia for eight years, working in the study "Ebru Riga".

Participation in the master class is for free. Materials for the workshop will be provided. The workshop will take place in Riga, Perses Street 9/11 (door code 10), on the 4th floor. However we are inviting all the interesents to apply in advance!

Vivaldi's "Seasons" is one of the most popular opuses of the classical music, having experienced myriad playing and interpretations around the world. In composing this later famous music, Vivaldi has enjoyed heartily the drawing of the natural and household scenes and has also written their word transcript in the score. There is no shortage of harmony or fiction in these pieces.

The most distinguished video artists of Latvia - Artis Dzērve, Ineta Sipunova, Vikijs (Viktors Keino) and Minus Eight (Andris Vētra) - each has prepared a special 3D video performance for their seasons, which will give the famous Vivaldi music an additional dimension.

Inviting to virtual meeting "Cultural Charm" to get acquainted with Russian cultural traditions in Jelgava, on December 17

On Thursday, December 17 at 17.00, the conversations' evening "Cultural Charm" - an online meeting, inviting foreign nationals living in Latvia with their families and representatives of the local community, will take place. During the online meeting the interesents will learn more about the Russian culture, its history and the maintenance of traditions in Jelgava. The virtual meeting will take place on Zoom platform.

The origins of Russian culture in Jelgava started on 9 November 1865, when the Russian club "Kružok" was organised, the founding members of which were merchants, employees of the governorate's chancellery and the Russian army officials. The Russian Community of Latvia was formed in Riga in 1991, while Jelgava formed a section of the Russian Community of Latvia on 14 May 1992, the Chairman of which was Raisa Kozacenko, but the secretary - Mihail Rjabov - both were Jelgava Council councillors at that time. At the time of historically difficult times, the community brought together Russian people, saved and developed Russian language and culture, passed it on to the new generation. Following the re-registration of associations, the Jelgava section of the Russian Community of Latvia became legally and financially independent in 2004 and turned into Jelgava Russian Society "Istok" in 2005. The ensemble "Slavjanočka" was created under the auspices of the society, which still delights listeners and viewers not only in Jelgava, but in whole Latvia and even beyond country borders. Since 2014, the Russian Society of Jelgava "Istok", has been headed by Snezana Zenovjeva. The society "Istok" works successfully with Jelgava Council, the municipal authority "Kultūra" and other public organisations in Latvia and abroad.

In 2018, a children's dance studio "Fresh", a poet association "Egida" and a handicraft club led by L.Rinkuna were established. Since its founding, the Jelgava Russian Society "Istok" has been organizing the Russian Culture Week every year in the city. Although the world has changed in the meantime, traditionally the Russian Culture Week is based on the national values. The Russian Culture Week - it is not just a culturally-historical tradition, but an example of intergenerational inheritance. The events, which take place during this week, help to preserve and develop Russian language and traditions by giving children and grandchildren pride in belonging to the powerful Russian culture. During the 25 years, the Russian Society of Jelgava "Istok" has participated and organised numerous thematic contests and events, including: "Tatiana Day", "The Birth of Christ", "Masļenica", "Silver Age Poetry and Romances", "M.Lermontov Poetry", "In Memory of V.Visocky" ", "Sports Day", "March 8" and many other events.

The event "Cultural Charm" is organised to introduce immigrants with the nations living in Latvia and also to provide the local residents with the opportunity to get acquainted with them, to reveal the most vivid features of other cultures and also the hidden, invisible cultural facets, which would help in mutual integration processes as an educational information. The aim of such conversations' evening is also to ensure the mutual understanding and the development of intercultural dialogue.

The interesents are welcome to participate! The event is free of charge!

Inviting to inquire about Māra in Latvian folklore and mythology during the intercultural event on August 7

On Friday, 7 August 2020 at 16.00, all the foreigners living in Latvia with their families and representatives of the local community are welcome to the second intercultural event, devoted to one of the most important deities in the Latvian mythology - Māra. The event will take place in Riga, Pērses Street 9/11, (door code 10) on the 4th floor.

The event will be hosted by the members of the Katlakalns folklore set "Rāmupe". On the contents of the event tells the member of "Rāmupe" Gunta Saule: "We are always thinking about our existence on earth, about our life here and now. About its relationship with nature. On the relationship of everyone to nature because we live on nature - our food is of natural origin. August is special in nature and rural life because it already shows what harvest is - we can already see how generous the sun, rain and other natural conditions have been for us. In antiquity, when people were much more dependent on exactly what was growing in the fields, the deities that had been chosen for human support and a source of power, were very important. In our, Latvian, mythical, and spiritual grasp of the world, we can call Māra as a mother of nature. The supervisor of our local world. Māra looks after our lives and health. And after natural life and health. Māra has her cows and her cereal fields. However, Māra also owns forests, meadows, shrubs, the sea, rivers, roads, and everything we are connected with every day. In our lesson, we will talk and sing about Māra and will meet her world."

In order to gain insight into the traditions and cultural characteristics of other nations, the foreigners living in Latvia will be invited to introduce similar deities, paying homage to them in their land and country, or to tell a national tale, saying, belief, or sing a song.

Inviting to a creative workshop of decoupage on March 6

On Friday, March 6, 2020 from 16.00 to 19.00 foreigners, living in Latvia with families, and representatives of the local community are welcome to attend an educational, creative lesson - a workshop of decoupage. It will take place in Riga, Perses Street 9/11, (door code 10) on the 4th floor.

Decoupage (ancient decoration technique) is an interesting and surprising method of designing different objects. It's a decorative technique used to decorate practically anything - porcelain, plastic, wood, paper, glass and even fabric. Using of the right working materials - furniture, container sets, wooden boxes and even footwear and clothing - brings a new and unique value.

Decoupage technique is excellent because you don't have to be able to draw, and the process is not irreversible, because it is possible to create a composition that seems most suitable for the subject. Decoupage allows anyone to feel fit into the role of an artist. You can learn basic skills and get information during one lesson, so you can create wonderful jobs with your own hands. At the time, each will make a practicable object.

    In the creative lesson's programme:

  • basic materials and techniques of decoupage,
  • design of household objects.

During the fascinating lesson, we will learn the basics of decoupage technique, will learn to create adorable dishes and interior accessories with our own hands, and will let the interior articles live a second life.

The participation is free of charge.

You are welcome to apply! The number of participants is limited.
